Mrs. Kim’s Music Class in November
November is the Native American Heritage Month. This month, we focus on
the heritage and music of our nation’s first inhabitants, the Native Americans.
Students study how Native Americans celebrate the magnificent nature
with music and dance with unique and authentic instruments like
shakers, bells, and drums. Here are the highlights of musical selections
for the Native American Unit:

Bear Hunting Song
3rd Grade: Hosisipa (Come Home with Message)
We are also getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with music.
All grade learn the traditional Thanksgiving song - “Over the River and Through the Woods.”
Kindergarten and 1st-grade students learn a song using a beautiful melody by Frank Schubert called “Thank You” with an American sign language. 3rd graders learn their special song called "Thanksgiving" in a 2-part round.
In addition to singing with heartfelt expressions of thankfulness, all grades learn a few humorous songs and chants with that funny
bird – Turkey, of course!
Thanksgiving Unit cannot be completed without all the folk dances from the old colonial time, such as “The Wild Turkey” for 3rd graders, “Chimes of Dunkirk” for 1st graders and “Turkey in the Straw” for Kindergarteners.
Not only it is lovely to watch children dance together with partners, but Folk dancing also teaches basic concepts of rhythm, repetition, sequencing, patterning, predictability, anticipation, musical cues, auditory discrimination, and counting, etc. - it fulfills many goals and aspects of music education. It is also a very multicultural—exposing children to dances from around the world is very valuable. Folk dances represent different historical and social times and how all cultures, nations, and people are connected and interrelated.
For Veteran’s Day, all students listen and honor music from the five devisions of US armed forces:
Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National and Coast Guards.
Happy Veteran’s Day!
