Mrs. Kim's Music Class in December
In my music class, students study some of the favorite and traditional holiday music and songs to celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Las Posadas, and Kwanzaa. The holiday music and songs are carefully chosen based on the National Standards of Music Education and the Common Core Standard. Holiday music and activities are not meant to represent the most significant in the various cultures but are a sampling of celebrations observed by many people.
It is important to know how similar the practices are among people and to remind the “US" refers to everyone on earth.
It is wonderful to see so much joy fill the classroom when students learn, share, and celebrate together the holiday season with music. Music is, indeed, a universal language!
We sing for peace, for love to prevail, for all of us to be a light of hope.
In addition to the repertoire of holiday songs and instrumental activities,
students of all grades spend some time learning Folk Dances of Israel.
The circle formation of dances gives us a sense of belonging and togetherness.
The exotic and authentic music of Israel make us appreciate the diversity we
have in our school and community. Please ask your child to show you some
exciting dance steps. (Common Anchor #1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11)
We also study the ballet music, “The Nutcracker” by Peter
Tchaikovsky. Telling a story with ballet requires expression through graceful movements. “The Nutcracker” is one of the most magnificent and beautiful classical music of the holiday season. I am happy and proud to say ALL my students love to listen to the classical music, especially "The Nutcracker!"
